April 2019 Associate Minister's Column by The Reverend Nathan A. Ryan

Thank you, Congregation. Thank you, Board. Thank you Beth and Joel (our interims). Thank you for allowing me to take a one-month sabbatical. Colleagues have told me that in order to get the rest and reset a sabbatical is designed for (some colleagues have talked about how a sabbatical can completely transform a ministry), you must take more than a month. Because of what is going on right now, I don’t think it would be good for me or the church to take an extended sabbatical. Until the church transitions are settled, I’m going to take these one month a year mini-sabbaticals.

I will be away from after Easter until Memorial Day. I plan to visit the Unitarian Universalist Church in Albuquerque. They have a bustling church with satellite congregations. They also recently went through a transition similar to us – a 20+ year serving minister in a multi-minister setting retired. I want to see what we can glean from their success. I’m excited to report what I find.

While I’m away Beth will be available for any ministerial needs you may have. This is a good time to remind you that if you are going through a hard time, find yourself in the hospital, or just need someone to talk with, you can call on a minister.
