“The Scout Law: A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.” – Boy Scouts of America, August 1, 1911
Okay, I know some of us took a breather at the end of March, but April has been quite busy, especially with all the plans and activities for the Together Baton Rouge push to support the CATS dedicated funding vote, planning for the church's summer camp, and volunteering at the St. Vincent de Paul dining room, the bike to church day, just to name a few. Work continues on strategic planning, church governance and preparations for the Sunday May 20th Congregational Meeting at 1:00 pm in the sanctuary after a light lunch provided by the board, to elect church officers, and approve a path forward for the canvass drive. Childcare will be provided.
Please check out the church calendar online or the notices in the newsletter and order of service inserts for the date, time and location of our next board of trustees meeting. Interested members are welcome to attend. If you have a question or concern, or need to contact me directly, please call me at 225-931-6270 or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
So what about that quote up top? In spite of the serious differences and difficulties between the UUA and BSA several years ago, I still keep what is valuable from what little I learned as a pretty pathetic boy scout back in the 60s and 70s. I periodically like to reflect on the Scout Law's list of qualities as a kind of checklist of how I’m doing. And now for a secret… just for fun, in each of the last of my 12 monthly columns, I have included one of the words from the Scouts Law, in order, from trustworthy through reverent. So now, for the final word: A call to be reverent might make some of us squirm about, but I think it underlies much of what we do in church, and what church can help teach is to do in our lives. To be reverent is to hold something in deep respect; ideas that are true, beautiful, and essential, each other, all persons, and the earth we share. I keep coming back to the word, and it challenges me to try to see the best in everything, and continue to work for the good, even when it’s difficult.
